Podcast Playlist of a Woman in Agriculture

It is springtime in Saskatchewan and for many of us that means extra windshield time. Whether in the field, on the highway, or executing '“gopher” duties, hours behind the wheel can get monotonous. Listening to podcasts can be a nice contrast to the radio. I set out to update my podcast list a few weeks ago. I polled friends, family, and even some acquaintances on social media. I received some surprising recommendations and have since added several new podcasts to my playlist that have me looking forward to getting back in my truck each day. Below is a list of some old favorites and some new additions, all currently set to auto-download in my podcast app.

Personal Development

·       Finding Greatness with Paige Lawrence and Arianne Jones – two athletes share insights from their journeys as Olympians and finding their post-retirement paths to greatness.

·       The Happiness Lab – is created by a Yale Professor. Episodes are always well researched, have high production value and are generally packed full of actionable insights that might make your day or year a little happier.

·       Work Life – author, professor, and organization psychologist Adam Grant explores all things related to work. Recent episodes, “The Not-So-Great Resignation” and “Rethinking Flexibility at Work” shed light on some all-too-common, pandemic-influenced office challenges.

·       The School of Greatness – entrepreneur Lewis Howes interviews high achievers from all walks of life. With two episodes every week there is a huge backlog of content to dig in to.

True Crime

·       The Pit – a CBC podcast that follows a Saskatchewan-based murder case over the course of several years, including a trial. True crime seems to hit a little harder when it’s close to home.

·       Up and Vanished – Season 1 chronicles the cold case of Tara Grinstead a high school teacher that went missing from a small town in Georgia. Current episodes are following the trial of the man suspected of her murder.

·       My Favorite Murder (MFM) – two comedians tell each other true crime stories. It’s kind of like listening to a grown-up version of telling spooky stories to your best friend at a sleepover.

·       Crime Junkie – similar to MFM, but with more research. Two female hosts with unique backgrounds share their latest true crime obsessions through fact-based story telling.

Make you Laugh

·       Smartless – listen to Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes interview celebrities and give each other a hard time.

·       Armchair Expert – this podcast is exclusive to Spotify. The longform interviews of celebrities and academics are always interesting and usually good for a laugh or two.

Educational

·       Stuff You Should Know – the hosts research and discuss random topics, using pop culture as a point of entry to complex and interesting ideas. It is long-running and top-rated for a reason.

·       The Knowledge Project – listen and learn from the best in a podcast hosted by Canadian, Shane Parrish. He interviews heavy hitters from business, academia, authors, and more with the goal of sparking curiosity in the listener.

Ag-Centric

·       Diversity Imperative – minorities, diversity and inclusion are traditionally topics not widely explored in agriculture. Two Canadian women with prairie roots are tackling these sometimes-difficult topics through open conversations across the industry.

·       Growing the Future – Saskatchewan-based entrepreneur Dan Aberhart interviews influential individuals from ag-business, ag-tech, and the broader farming community. Listen to enough episodes and you might even hear a surprising perspective from a someone you know.

·       The Future of Agriculture – As the name suggests, host Tim Hammerich explores the people, companies, and ideas he sees as shaping the future of agri-business. He approaches each interview with curiosity and a clear passion for all facets of our industry.

If you listen to any of these podcasts, let us know what you think! Best of luck this season and stay safe out there.
